Meta’s $9.1B Alberta AI Data Center, Gas Power Behind the Build

Meta’s planned AI data center in Alberta points to a larger infrastructure story: hyperscale AI growth is increasingly tied to dedicated power generation, natural gas infrastructure, and grid capacity.

The company plans to invest more than US$9.1 billion to build its first AI data center in Canada and its largest outside the United States. The project will be built in Sturgeon County, Alberta, and powered by a natural gas-fired plant developed by a consortium that includes Pembina Pipeline.

That power arrangement matters. Alberta has been courting hyperscale data center investment, but the province’s grid cannot support multiple large AI data centers without additional power supply. As a result, Alberta is prioritizing projects that build or secure their own generation, which is exactly how Meta’s project is being structured.

Rather than treating the announcement as only a data center investment, the map frames it as an Alberta energy infrastructure story. AI campuses need land, power, gas supply, transmission access, and local infrastructure. In Sturgeon County, those pieces are beginning to align around a dedicated gas-to-power model.
