Frequently Asked Questions

About Rextag:

Rextag is data aggregator. We collect data from hundreds of sources in different formats to generate a centrally-integrated database for the energy industry. We license this database in GIS format and produce products and services to support various types of companies in the energy industry.

Rextag has been providing data services to energy companies since 2007.

About our Energy GIS data:

GIS stands for “Geographic Information System”. Simply put, it is a database of recorded information, similar to data in an Excel sheet, that has associated geographical locations. A GIS record contains detailed information for a specific company or business type (for example, the owner, capacity, etc. for a refinery). A GIS database can be used to query and filter those records based on specific criteria (i.e. all refineries owned by Shell or all refineries located five miles from a coastline).

We collect and license data on nearly all pipeline and facility infrastructure, from upstream well data, land and mineral ownership, gathering and transmission systems, processing facilities and refineries, all the way to downstream utilities, power generation and electric transmission.

We provide data on virtually all commodities in the broader energy space. From full-stream well oil and gas, to transmission quality crude, natural gas and its derivatives: refined products (jet fuel, gasoline, etc) natural gas liquids (LPG, propane, butane, Y-grade, etc). We also provide relevant data on commodities such as ammonia, CO2, water, hydrogen, etc. and finally, electricity.

No data in 100% accurate; however we pride ourselves on being the leader in this sector. Our data is recognized as the most accurate and complete information by over 80% of all major U.S. energy companies and we strive to improve and expand upon it daily.

Our team works to research and update our databases daily. These updates are then pushed back to our customers on a monthly basis.

Of course! We want you to be 100% confident with your decision and we will support you in the evaluation process. Contact for full demos, samples and anything else needed to help you make your decision.

There is no simple answer to this. We manage over 100 different databases and each is derived from a variety of sources. We are a data aggregator and utilize manual and automated processes using artificial intelligence to collect and normalize our data. We source information from State and Federal agencies, company presentations, annual reports, press releases, etc.

It depends. Within the energy industry, we serve different players. Midstream companies, for example, may use our data for business development and to better understand the competitive landscape. Upstream oil producers may want to look for takeaway capacity and pipeline infrastructure near potential drilling sites. The uses are just as varied for financial institutions, downstream companies, engineering and consulting companies, government agencies, etc.

Technically, we do not ‘sell’ data. We provide an annual licensing service. You can license our data by geographic region or commodity type, whatever best suits your needs. For example, you may license the natural gas dataset (which will include all pipelines and facilities related to that commodity) for the Northeastern part of the U.S. or license crude oil, natural gas and refined products for all of North America (U.S., Canada and Mexico).

Costs will vary by commodity and regional combination, and can range from $1,000 up to $50,000.

We provide GIS data in file geodatabase formats or ESRI shapefiles. These files can be opened and manipulated using ArcGIS software (a 3rd party, paid software) or QGIS (a popular free open-source alternative). Additionally, our data is accessible via our web-mapping application (Energy DataLink), which you only need a web browser to view.

About our Energy DataLink web portal:

Energy DataLink is an innovative solution that provides aggregated, organized, structural and non-structural information to professionals across all sectors of the energy supply chain. By interconnecting data sources and providing multi-level data filters, Energy DataLink provides industry-leading energy data via a simple, online interface.

Yes and no. Energy DataLink offers an introductory Basic license, which is free to access. With a free Basic account, users have access to many features with some data limitations. Basic users are also given access to one Premium data layer: Oil & Gas Well Production and Completions. This data gives you free access to all our oil and gas well databases. Beyond that, you can upgrade for further functionality and access to other Premium datasets.

Each account tier provides access to more data and functionality. Please see the chart below to determine which tier best suits your needs.

Yes. Energy DataLink is included with your GIS data license as an additional benefit and will interface with your licensed data.

Much like with our GIS data, Energy DataLink provides access to data across the entire energy value chain, including upstream, downstream, midstream and energy commodities. In addition to map-based data, you also get access to the world’s largest energy library, a repository of millions of energy-related documents such as presentations, annual reports, etc.

The database covers all commodities in the broader energy space. This includes full-stream well oil and gas, transmission quality crude, natural gas and its derivatives (refined products like jet fuel and gasoline, and natural gas liquids such as LPG, propane, butanes and Y-grade). We also provide information on commodities like ammonia, CO2, water, hydrogen and electricity.

While no data in 100% accurate, we pride ourselves for being the leader in the energy sector. Our data is recognized for its accuracy by over 80% of all major U.S. energy companies, and we make improvements daily to ensure its integrity.

Our team works to update our databases daily. Customers can expect to receive these updates on a monthly basis.

We will gladly provide our customers with the opportunity to evaluate our data before purchasing via full demos, dataset samples and other materials needed to ensure they are 100% confident in their choice.

We manage over 100 different databases and each is sourced from a number of places, including State and Federal agencies, company presentations, annual report and press releases. As a data aggregator, we utilize manual and automated processes to collect and normalize all our information.

We serve a vast number of companies in the energy sector, including financial institutions, downstream companies, engineering and consulting companies and government agencies. Each company utilizes our data for different reasons. For example, Midstream may use our data for business development or to better understand the competitive landscape, while upstream oil producers may want to look for takeaway capacity and pipeline infrastructure near potential drilling sites.

Energy DataLink offers access to databases and functionalities at different levels. Basic licenses are free. We also offer Premium licenses, which can be region- or commodity-specific, depending on your areas of interest. For example, you can select the natural gas dataset (which will include all pipelines and facilities related to that commodity) for the Northeastern part of the U.S. or a commodity-based dataset that includes crude oil, natural gas, and refined products for all of North America (U.S., Canada and Mexico). Pricing for Premium datasets will vary by commodity and regional combination, and can range from $1,000 up to $50,000.

No. Energy DataLink works on most browsers with basic internet connectivity and is designed to be intuitive. However, we do provide free training and tutorials to get you started, if needed.
