Kinder Morgan stands as North America's top independent mover of petroleum products with around 2.4 million barrels daily across the continent. The bulk of this flow happens through its Products Pipelines division, which navigates gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, crude oil, and condensate through a network of about 9,500 miles of pipelines. Alongside, the company maintains roughly 65 liquid terminals that not only store these fuels but also blend in ethanol and biofuels for a green touch.

  • Daily Barrel Transportation: ~2.4 million
  • Liquid Terminals Count: 65
  • Pipeline Mileage: ~9,500 miles

KMI's Pacific Operations command an impressive network of approximately 3,000 miles of pipelines that are central to distributing refined petroleum products like gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel across the Western U.S., touching states from Arizona to Texas. This part of their system, rooted in history since 1956, is vital for moving over one million barrels daily to various destinations.

Among the key pipelines:

El Paso Natural Gas Pipeline System

The El Paso Natural Gas (EPNG) pipeline is a huge network that stretches over 10,140 miles and carries natural gas from San Juan, Permian, and Anadarko basins to areas like California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Northern Mexico. Besides moving gas around, EPNG can store about 44 billion cubic feet of it underground in Southeast New Mexico.

During the winter of 2022, the price for natural gas went way up, more than $45 for every MMBtu, especially near Southern California. The reason was a very cold winter and not having enough supply, partly because one of EPNG's main pipelines, Line 2000, was shut down for 18 months.

Things got even tougher in August 2022 when there was an explosion and problem with the same Line 2000, causing a big drop in how much gas could go from the Permian Basin to Southern California by 640 million cubic feet a day.

But by November 2023, Kinder Morgan, the company behind EPNG, managed to send a record amount of gas through the system - an average of 2.4 billion cubic feet per day from the Permian Basin, which was 10% more than what they had been sending over the last four months.

Energy Information Administration (EIA) mentioned that the EPNG pipeline system was undergoing scheduled maintenance, which temporarily limited its capacity to transport natural gas.

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

In August 2021, Kinder Morgan made a significant move into the RNG market by acquiring Kinetrex Energy for $310 million. Based in Indianapolis, Kinetrex stood out as the Midwest's leading LNG supplier and a rapidly emerging force in the RNG production and supply sector.

In August 2022, Kinder Morgan further expanded its RNG footprint by acquiring North American Natural Resources Inc. (NANR) and its associated entities, North American Biofuels LLC and North American-Central LLC, for $135 million. These acquisitions were projected to add approximately 2 Bcf of RNG to KMI's annual production. Like previous acquisitions of Kinetrex Energy and Mas CanAm, it was part of company's broader strategy to enhance its role across the entire RNG value chain. With all RNG facilities up and running, the company's total RNG production capacity was expected to hit around 7.7 Bcf per year. Three NANR assets were anticipated to contribute 4.8 megawatt-hours in 2023, further diversifying Kinder Morgan's renewable energy portfolio.

Kinder Morgan is advancing its commitment to renewable energy, targeting an increase in its RNG production to 6.4 billion cubic feet annually by the end of 2024. The company has successfully launched three RNG facilities in 2023 and has plans for another addition in the second half of the year. Furthermore, Kinder Morgan is exploring the potential to repurpose its landfill-gas-to-electricity assets for RNG production.

KMI has allocated $84 million towards its energy transition projects, with a significant 92% of this investment dedicated to RNG development. This investment is distributed over a period and represents a modest portion of Kinder Morgan's total spending, which is predominantly focused on traditional energy infrastructure.

They anticipate that, once fully operational, these RNG projects will significantly enhance their financial performance, projecting that the earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization from these projects could increase sixfold.

In January 2024, Kinder Morgan expanded its renewable natural gas (RNG) offerings with the start of the Prairie View RNG facility, which became operational on December 20, 2023. Located in Wyatt, Indiana, this facility processes landfill gas from the Prairie View Landfill to produce about 0.8 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of RNG each year.

This addition, along with the earlier completion of the Twin Bridges and Liberty landfill RNG projects in 2023, developed in partnership with one of the top landfill operators in the U.S., increased Kinder Morgan's annual RNG production by roughly 3.9 Bcf.

The RNG produced from these facilities can replace about 28 million gallons of diesel fuel annually, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions—around 280,000 tons. This achievement aligns with efforts to mitigate climate change impacts, considering methane's high potency as a greenhouse gas, more than 28 times that of carbon dioxide for trapping heat in the atmosphere as noted by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Kinder Morgan's strategy involves capturing methane from landfill biogas and converting it into RNG, renewable electricity, or medium-Btu energy. This integrated approach not only expands the supply of RNG but also supports other organizations in adopting renewable energy solutions to decrease their carbon footprint, emphasizing Kinder Morgan's commitment to environmental sustainability and emission reduction.

Investments

Kinder Morgan as well as TC Energy, Enbridge, and Williams, will spend the most on pipelines, with about 40% of their capex slated for pipeline modernization projects and maintenance.

RNG, which is biogas made clean enough for pipelines, is drawing investments for its eco-friendly benefits and role in cutting carbon emissions. Boosted by incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, companies, including those in traditional oil and gas sectors, are pursuing RNG projects. These projects aim to collect methane—a key greenhouse gas—from sources like landfills and dairy farms, turning it into a cleaner energy form.

In Q2 2023, Kinder Morgan expanded its project portfolio by around $500 million and completed around $450 million worth of projects. This activity resulted in a project backlog totaling $3.75 billion, with a significant focus—80%—on natural gas and sustainable projects, including initiatives like certified natural gas, RNG, renewable diesel, and inputs for renewable fuels.

During the same time, KMI launched the first of three Indiana-based landfill RNG projects (a venture that became part of Kinder Morgan following the acquisition of RNG developer Kinetrex Energy in 2021). The facility next to a Waste Management landfill will transform around 8.64 MMscf/d of landfill gas into high-quality RNG.

Another two, situated at the Liberty and Prairie View landfills in Indiana, commenced operations in Q3 2023. These projects will increase Kinder Morgan's yearly RNG production by 3.9 billion cubic feet.

KMI is also working on getting approvals and finishing the design to turn a Michigan landfill into an RNG facility, expected to start in mid-2024, boosting RNG production by another 0.8 billion cubic feet. KMI's expectations for 2024 to invest $2.3 billion in discretionary capital expenditures including expansion projects and contributions to joint ventures.
